of proposals based on the work of joe's task force. and in the days ahead i intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality. because while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, no piece of legislation that will prevent every tragedy, every act of evil, if there is even one thing we can do to reduce this violence. if there is even one life that can be saved then we have got an obligation to try it. >> the president announced he would sign 23 executive orders giving law enforcement, schools and mental health facilities some additional schools to reduce gun violence, including strengthening background check syste systems. then he announced his legislative proposals. >> first, it is time to congress to require a universal background check for anybody trying to buy a gun. second, congress should restore a ban on military-style assault weapons, and a ten-round limit for magazines. [ applause ] >> and finally, congress needs to help, rather than hinder law enforcement as it does its job. we should get tougher on people

a sweeping list of proposals aimed at reducing gun violence as part of a package put together by joe biden and his white house task force. senior administration officials tell nbc news the biggest proposals include universal background checks, a ban on high-capacity magazines, anything that carries more than ten rounds of ammunition. the president is also expected to ask congo reinstate the assault weapons ban. as for executive orders, are the president's expected to seek aggressive prosecution for those who break existing laws. for example, people who lie during background checks. the white house will be joined by children from around the country who wrote letters to him following the newtown shooting. this is not the first time the white house brought in special guests for the backdrop of a major announcement. recently middle class taxpayers were invited to the white house before a presidential speech on extending tax rates. >>> conservative media mogul rupert murdoch offered his thoughts on twitter. hopefully we'll get real actions on guns tomorrow, not some stage-managed stunt. >>> new

5 reporter joe vazquez shows us, it got ugly outside court today. >> [ bleep ] [ bleep ] >> reporter: outside the santa clara county hall of justice, emotions boil over as a confrontation between two families breaks out into a fight. the cops quickly surround the woman in the black t-shirt and slap the cuffs on her. family members say she is the 18-year-old daughter of christopher soriano, a san jose man who was shot to death on new year's eve. the folks in white t-shirts are family and friends of luis hernandez, a handyman who is behind bars for killing soriano. he is charged with murder. his family believes he was simply trying to make a citizen's arrest of a man he believed was burglarizing a car and shouldn't be in jail. >> we request them to let him go and to set a bail that this family can put forth. the man had no right to kill my son! >> reporter: the people in black t-shirts disagree. they are family and friends of soriano, the man who was killed. >> he had no legal gun, for god sakes. and he kills a man, a father of five

and the inauguration day we'll continue through the night and hear later from joe biden and he'll be addressing the troops and as the long festivities continue, i want to begin with the president's inaugural address from earlier today. this speech is indicative who this president is and where he wants to steer america as he now today start the second term. the address, first the most partisan and divisive address in living history. it's only unity and common purpose as a means to an end and in the end, what obama defiance is advancing his own left wing agenda. now, time and time again in the the speech, there were always jabs, not always direct, but obvious aimed at republicans and conservatives in america and at one point in the speech obama said, quote, we cannot make absolutism for principle or substitute politics or name calling as reason to debate. >> was he referring to name calling, republicans are-- guys who want the dirty air, dirty water and kids with down syndrome, the elderly, fending for themselves. is not feeding the hungry children, is that the name calling. and charged mitt romn
